Chart of the week

Housing starts (annual rate)1.28 million · August 2026

Source: U.S. Census Bureau.

Housing starts moved down to 1.28 million in August from 1.31 million in the prior month. That is down from 1.29 million a year earlier. Over the past 10 years it has ranged from 0.94 million (April 2020) to 1.81 million (April 2022).

What it measures. The seasonally adjusted annual pace at which builders broke ground on new privately owned homes.

Why it matters. Home construction is highly sensitive to interest rates and has large knock-on effects for jobs and spending, which makes it a classic leading indicator of the economy.
